EAST GREENWICH, R.I. (WJAR) — After nine years of protecting quarterback Tom Brady, retired NFL center Dan Koppen has found a new career in the craft beer business.

Koppen and his partner Jeremy Ruff are set to open Linesider Brewing in East Greenwich Friday.

“My wife always said, 'You were too young to be retired at this point.' I tried a few other things, but was still looking for that one thing that I wanted to do with my second career. My brother-in-law came over one weekend and we home brewed and I just started home brewing after that and then I ran into my partner," said Koppen.

“Then, we kind of got to talking and eventually started brewing together and one day had this idea. Let’s make this a reality,” said Linesider co-owner, Jeremy Ruff.

There's been a boom in the craft beer business over the last five years, which is something that Koppen is looking to capitalize on.

“Here you are getting it right from the source. I think you’re getting really good beer that has been keg or canned that morning maybe,” said Koppen.

Ruff shared similar sentiments.

“A lot of people are looking for that farm to table thing -- the experience, the destination, fresh beer," he said

The new state laws over the last three years also help the more that two dozen local breweries in Rhode Island succeed.

"(That was done by) allowing us to serve three 12 ounce pours in the tap room and in tastings. They upped the level of carry out where that being howlers -- 32-ounces -- or growlers -- 64-ounces -- or a case of cans,” said Koppen.

As for the name?

"Linesider is just another name for striped bass. It's one of those things some people get it and some don’t, but we kind of like it,” said Koppen.

Linesider Brewing will celebrate its grand opening November 23 from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m.
